History: Turabian Style

NGU Writing Center

The Writing Center, sponsored and operated by the Department of English, is one of North Greenville University’s academic accommodation services available to all students at the undergraduate level. The tutoring staff, consisting of English department faculty and referred students, is available to help in all areas, including discipline-specific documentation, grammar and punctuation, clarity and style, organization, and prewriting.

The Writing Center is located in Brissie Classroom Suite, which is the lower level of the Averyt-Wood Learning Center, accessed from the commuter parking lot. Students seeking help are asked to sign up in advance on the schedule located on their scheduling website. Students should select WRITING CENTER on the right side of the page. Regular, weekly sessions for students who need extra attention can also be arranged with a tutor.

About Turabian

Turabian Style was developed especially for students by Kate Turabian, the dissertation secretary at the University of Chicago, and based on the Chicago style of writing. Turabian Style is used mainly for history papers, but it is sometimes used in other disciplines.

Chicago style is a standard used for formatting scholarly books. Turabian knew that most students are concerned with writing papers, so she narrowed the focus and refined the rules specifically for paper writing. Turabian style omits some of the information that is relevant for publishing, but it also departs from Chicago Style in a few other ways.
